We were reached by Dancenorth for a curious project. They needed a table that could be used for dinner (standard height) and also to perform on top of it (lower height). The performance created by Dancenorth included dinner and dancing on the table. And of course, it needed to be done on a very low budget.
Fun and challenging brief! We looked into tables depicted in old paintings and also I remembered this amazing performance by La Fura dels Baus where there was a big platform supported by people, and that kept changing along with the performance.
With no budget, the brief and those referenced in mind we design a round table laminated black that will have two types of legs. Normal dining legs that will fold outdoors to be used by the audience to help lower the table. And a shorter pair of legs hidden under to stop the table at stage height for the dancer to perform. Simple and successful. Like in old paintings, the table disappears within the dark space. The table is not the important part, the performance is.
